Ever wondered about the people (and stories) behind our Mains competitions?

Wonder no more! Here's what we know....if you'd like to add or amend these details please let Glyn know and he'll edit this page on your behalf.

Maureen Edwards (Cup)

Maureen was a member of the soroptomists . She was a tall elegant lady who always tried her best. She had been a former NHS manager who enjoyed playing tennis but was also an avid sports fan.

Ken Callister (Pairs)

Ken followed his father into bowling and was a member of both Calderfield and Eton clubs. He became an excellent bowler and was Calderfield club champion many times and was club captain until his untimely death in 2015. He made up strange bowls phrases which are still uttered at times today such as ‘ short as a carrot’ !
Ken was well liked by all in the club (and the pub!) but pensioners teams in the leagues used to refer to him as the ‘ youngest looking pensioner’ . A tree was planted by the green in his memory and blossoms at the start of each bowling season. The glass Ken Callister pairs cups were presented by Ron Brown (a former member) who had won 2 pairs mains with Ken as his partner.

Joe Dixon (Shield)

A long time member of the club, we think he joined in the late 1980's. He was a good and enthusiastic bowler,  taking part in both league matches and Mains competitions. He was a very affable person and a popular member known for his terrible jokes!

Ralph Murray (Cup)

Ralph was a late convert to Calderfield and to the game of crown green bowling itself. He took up the sport well too his fifties and was soon smitten with the game, playing regularly at weekends and taking part in league matches. Ralph was introduced to the club by Mike Rattigan. He had only been a member for, at most, a couple of years when he became the clubs honorary secretary. Before retirement he had been the head of a number of NHS Trusts, including head of the Health Service of Gibraltar. He died of cancer at the young age of 60 and the Ralph Murray cup was founded in his memory and donated by his wife , Alison.

Jim Smith (Pairs)

Jim was a long standing member of the club who loved bowling having won many trophies and captained a number of league teams over the years. He proactively recruited and coached new members, including his daughter Wendy, and shared his helpful ,albeit strange phrases such as ‘stroke the green’ . He loved the social side of bowls and spending time with his bowling buddies telling bad jokes and many stories over and over again. His building skills were put to good use doing various projects around the club and he co-ordinated the installation of the huge club hut which still stands today.

George Whalley

A long time member of the club and often referred to as the ‘grandfather ‘ of the club. He was a very active committee member including social secretary  - his presentation evening invites always ended with ‘Carriages at 11pm’ . He organised many excursions to a variety of venues eg. NALGO green in St. Helens ; indoor bowls weekends in Blackpool where they stayed in a hotel run by someone called Bowler; David Bryant indoor bowls centre in Prestatyn where he (and a number of other members) played weekly in the winter. He had served in the RAF during World War 2 and worked as an engineer at Liverpool University where he met Jim Smith who introduced him to bowling . He was also a keen ballroom dancer. Since his death at the age of nearly 103 , his son and wife have attended the playing of this mains game in his memory.

Flaherty (Cup)

Named after Stephen Flaherty, one of our club's founder members. We think this picture was taken at the Calderfield green.

Chamberlain (Shield)

Tom Chamberlain was a long time member, joining some time before 1991. He was married to Sheila Chamberlain who was the Ladies Captain. Tom was a good sport, once dressing up as a woman ( albeit rather ugly!) in the Ladies v Gents Main.

Gerard Wood (Trophy)

Formerly bowled for Birch House before joining Calderfield. His wife was also a member but tragically died in a car crash at the junction of Menlove Avenue and Green Lane (Mattie Pritchard also died, all the car passengers were lady bowlers).

Gordon Bruce (Trophy)

George Carter (Cup)
